Flexible cystoscopy
This is a minor diagnostic procedure which enables the doctor to view the inside lining of the urethra and bladder and to check your prostate.

- No special preparation is required and you should be able to return to normal activity afterwards.
- No admission is needed
- No need for starvation
- No need for anaesthesia.
Local anaesthetic jelly is inserted into the outer opening (urethra) and left for a few minutes to take effect. There are NO needles involved. The doctor examines the urethra and bladder using a thin instrument like a telescope (cystoscope). Sterile water flows in to allow a better view of the bladder walls – you may become aware of your bladder filling.
A small tissue sample (biopsy) might be taken.
The examination only takes a few minutes and you will be able to dress and use the toilet again.
Following a flexible cystoscopy you may experience the following:
- Discomfort or a burning sensation when passing urine – drink extra fluids for the next 2-3 days.
- Taking Citralka syrup may also help to relieve these symptoms
- You might pass urine more frequently for a few days.
- Your urine may be a little blood stained – drink extra fluids until this clears.
You will be told the results of the cystoscopy and of any follow-up arrangements before you leave.
